Nearby nature in Salt Lake City
When you think of Utah, one of the first things that probably comes to mind is its nature ― from the breathtaking Wasatch Mountain Range to the vast national parks. However, exploring these parts of Utah can be challenging on a budget. Here are a few cost-friendly ways to enjoy nature in Salt Lake City.
Ensign Peak Trail
This hike in the city is a mile-long, moderately challenging excursion. The inclined trail will take you to the peak of the hill and provide you with beautiful views of the Salt Lake City skyline, the Great Salt Lake and the neighboring mountain ranges. The trailhead is about two miles from the Salt Palace Convention Center (home of ARVO 2025). While it is walkable, a short $5 - $10 Uber ride can help you save energy for the hike.
- Distance from Convention Center: Approximately 2 miles
- Cost: Free if you walk, or $5 - $10 with Uber
Sugar House Park
Sugar House Park is one of the most coveted areas in Salt Lake City. Many locals choose to live in the nearby Sugar House neighborhood to take advantage of the Park’s lake, running trails and beautiful views of the mountains.
Sugar House is a trendy, young community with breweries such as Hopkins Brewing Company and Wasatch Brew Pub that are just a short walk from the Park. The neighborhood is about a 15-minute drive from the Convention Center, which is typically a $10 - $15 Uber ride. You can also take a Salt Lake City bus, which is only $2.50 one way.
- Distance from Convention Center: 10 - 15-minute drive or 45-minute bus ride
- Cost: $10 - $15 with Uber or a $5 bus ride, roundtrip
Liberty Park
Liberty Park is another popular nature spot in Salt Lake City. While it may not have the mountain views of Sugar House Park, it is a great option for a quick stroll located closer to the Convention Center. The Park is also next to Trolley Square ― a unique, trolley-themed marketplace in Salt Lake City.
- Distance from Convention Center: 5 - 10-minute drive or 20-minute bus ride
- Cost: $5 - $10 with Uber or a $5 bus ride, roundtrip
BONUS: For those with a car and some time, I highly recommend checking out the Bonneville Salt Flats. The drive is about 1.5 hours, but the view of the crystal-like salt flats against a backdrop of the Utah mountains is one of the most stunning views I have seen during my time in Salt Lake City.
You can also check out the Fifth Water Hot Springs, located about an hour away. The trail is a little less than five miles and leads to vibrant blue hot springs along a river.
