Meet a Vision Scientist: Abirami Santhanam, PhD
"I work as a research assistant professor at the University of Houston. I completed my undergraduate and master's degrees at Bharathidasan University in India then moved to Taiwan for my graduate studies. I received my doctorate in biochemistry from the National Taiwan University in Taiwan. During my postdoctoral career, I got to work with Dr. Steven Wilson from Cleveland Clinic on corneal wound healing and regeneration. Then I got the opportunity to work with Dr. John O'Brien on retina regeneration. The regenerative power of zebrafish combined with single-cell transcriptome analysis provided an excellent system to understand the exciting molecular mechanisms of regeneration in the retina. This captured my interest in retina research, and I'm continuing my journey as a vision scientist."
